Sites like MySpace, Facebook and Xanga
allow teens to share
stories, pictures, and videos with friends.
Social-networking sites can pose concerns such as negative content,
predators and cyber-bullying. Advertisments, especially on MySpace,
are very provacative. Also Adult Companies often create fake profiles
with links to their sites and send out mass friendship requests
to everyone online young and old.
How can I supervise what my child
is doing on their social-networking website?
The most effective solution is to have your child switch to a moderated
site like Nexus.ws.
Nexus has a team of moderators who can see whatever is going on
in the site. Whatever gets posted we will see it.
If it's not possible to switch to Nexus.ws, you can do the following:
|
- Have some fun with your kids and set up your own profile
on the site they use.
- Use this profile to periodically check up on your kids
profile and friends' profiles.
- Help your kid set their privacy settings to restrict
who can access their profile.
- Learn more at www.ConnectSafely.org.
